Etchings

Etching is an ancient and respected art form dating back at least five centuries. Each etching begins by covering a zinc plate with a thin layer of acid-resistant paint. The design is drawn with a sharp pointed stylus through the protective paint to expose the metal underneath. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath which etches the exposed metal. The plate goes into the acid bath several times to create different effects before it is complete and ready to print.

Once the etching proces is complete, the plate is heated and inked with a heavy oil-based ink. The excess ink is wiped away and the inked plate is placed on the bed of the etching press and covered with a dampened sheet of rag paper. The plate is then rolled through the press by hand at great pressure, causing the design to be transferred from the plate to the paper.

Kathy uses acid-free handmade paper with feathered edges for her etchings. She often embosses the paper to add further interest to her designs. Each etching is an original piece of art due to the technical and artistic work that goes into the creation of each individual print.
